NRA Competency Certificates

I have completed a two day course at Bisley, run by the NRA.  As of now, we are one of only a tiny handful of clubs in the UK (less than 50) with an NRA Club Instructor, authorised to train and assess candidates for the NRA Certificate of Competency (NRA SSS Certification Card).

You do NOT need to do a course, if you already hold a FAC / are a Full Member of the club.  The Chairman / Secretary will either assess you or have already assessed you by observation during the year.  You will then be offered a Competency Certificate / Card for the classes of firearm which may be used at the club.  This will then cover your use of firearms at MoD ranges.  Unfortunately, we cannot offer certification for iron-sighted or scoped rifle or HME firearms.

Anyone joining the club without a FAC will be put  through the course as part of their six month Probationary Period.

Security

Certificate holders always consider security.  The best form of security is anonymity.

A recent case in Sheffield of an armed gang forcing entry to residential premises and stealing firearms may have caused concern.  The police have informed the club secretary that this should not be a matter of great concern, as there is no evidence that certificate holders are being ‘targeted’.  Please speak to the Secretary if you have any worries about this matter.

  1. -    Minimise the number of people who know what you do.

  2. -    Be very careful when moving firearms in and out of residential premises (always covered)!

  3. -    Consider levels of physical security e.g. separate storage

  4. -    Keep keys / combination numbers separate from storage facilities

  5. -    Consider ‘layered’ security i.e. window locks, insurance locks, alarm systems, storage

  6. -    Don’t have shooting-related stickers in your car

  7. -    Review the Home Office publication on firearms security, which can be downloaded from the

        Home Office website.
